This week we are starting a new series: Freelance Flavors by Sorbet! We will periodically highlight the creative journey of freelancers and how they navigate the ups and downs of this lifestyle. The series will be primarily focused on creatives with a global footprint.

We chatted with Kamil Oseni. A Nigerian born Product Designer & UI/UX now living Toronto.

Tell us about the type of work that you do!

I'm a UX Designer, my role is multifaceted, encompassing Creative Design, Business Research, and Strategic Development. My objective is to bridge the gap between business goals and creative execution, focusing on profitability, accessibility, user engagement, and sustainable solutions.

Through my work, I aim to ensure that businesses not only meet their immediate objectives but also establish a foundation for long-term success. Examples of how I’ve applied these principles can be found in my portfolio, where I showcase projects that have successfully balanced aesthetic appeal with strategic business outcomes.

What is your experience with freelancing marketplaces?

Freelancing marketplaces have always felt like a competitive race to me... The platforms often lack a clear and intuitive user experience, making it a must to navigate through them more out of necessity than choice.

It’s apparent that these marketplaces are primarily designed with the clients' needs in mind, leaving freelancers to adapt as they can. This design approach creates an environment where freelancers are constantly competing, not just for projects but for visibility and recognition in a space that doesn’t fully cater to our needs.

As a creative, what is a great piece of advice someone shared that stayed with you?

One piece of advice that has profoundly influenced my approach to design is to ‘Stick to the basics and leave a piece of yourself in your creations.’

This wisdom emphasizes the importance of adhering to foundational design principles while also infusing your work with personal expression. It’s a reminder that while trends and technologies evolve, the core of impactful design lies in authenticity and a strong grasp of the basics.

By embedding a part of myself in my work, I strive to create designs that are not only effective and engaging but also uniquely representative of my perspective.

What makes you excited when thinking about Sorbet’s tool?

Definitely the zero percent freelancer fee!! [laughs].

On top of it there is also the promise to disrupt the traditional freelance marketplace model by prioritizing the interests of freelancers, potentially leading to a more balanced and fair ecosystem.

This approach will significantly enhance the sustainability of freelancing as a career, making it more viable for more people! I’m particularly keen to see how this model will impact the freelance community, offering a fresh perspective on how freelance work is valued and compensated. I can’t wait to try the platform!
